The crash happened when the driver veered off the westbound lane, striking a roadside message board before hitting a concrete barrier, traveling up an embankment, and ultimately colliding head-on with the bridge abutment at 6:16 a.m. The impact caused the truck to roll onto its side back onto the roadway, according to the Derry Township Police Department.

Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but the driver, who was the vehicle's only occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the incident, highway engineers inspected the bridge for structural integrity, and Route 322 was closed until 3:15 p.m. as investigators worked the scene. The Derry Township Police Department Traffic Safety Unit and the Dauphin County Accident Reconstruction Team are handling the investigation.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact Sgt. Jana Klinger at (717) 534-2202. The driver’s identity is being withheld pending family notification.
